WHAT ARE LIPOSOMES MADE OF?
Liposomes are made of essential phospholipids which is the same material that the human cells are made of. The phosphate head of phospholipids is hydrophilic; it loves water. The fatty-acid tails (lipids) are hydrophobic; they hate water. Whenever phospholipids are in a water-based solution, they arrange themselves in a manner that the hydrophobic tail quickly moves to distance themselves from the liquid. All the tails turn inward and all the heads outwards (towards the water) and form a double-layered membrane. This structure is nearly identical to the double-layer structure of the cell membranes in our body.
WHAT DO LIPOSOMES DO?
Liposomes can pass through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream, for distribution to the cells, due to the composition of it. From there, they can assimilate into the cells and through the cell membrane to release the nutrients. Taking the dosage through liposomal supplements causes less gastric distress than caused by taking oral pills.
WHY DO LIPOSOMES HELP NUTRIENT ABSORPTION?
Vitamin C is absorbed almost exclusively in the small intestines and requires sodium-dependent vitamin C co-transporter (SVCTs) proteins. Without these proteins, Vitamin C isn’t absorbed. HOW DO LIPOSOMES WORK?
The phosphate (source of “phospho” in phospholipid) head of phospholipids is hydrophilic — it loves water — whereas the fatty-acid tails (lipids) are hydrophobic — they hate water.
When phospholipids find themselves in a water-based solution, the hydrophobic tails quickly move to distance themselves from the liquid just like oil separates from vinegar. So, as all the tails turn inward and all the heads turn toward the liquid, they form a double-layered membrane.
Because of this unique composition, liposomes can pass through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream for distribution to the cells. From there, they can assimilate into the cells and through the cell membrane to release the nutrients.
There are a couple of theories suggesting as to how the nutrients in a liposome are actually released. One of the theory states that phospholipids are processed in the liver as fats and that this process helps release the nutrient. The other theory proposes that cells all over the body are always in a lookout for phospholipid materials to repair cell membranes and other cellular structures. Then this “stealing” of the phospholipid allows the contents of the liposome to leak out.
It is quite possible that both processes occur. In any case, the therapeutic value and the increased delivery of nutrients from liposome-encapsulated drugs have been scientifically confirmed. At present, liposomes are the most bioavailable oral way to deliver nutrients.
